This year, for Valentine’s Day, I decided to sponsor a shelter pet in honor of Josh, who has the biggest heart for abandoned animals of anyone I know. I picked a little lady who currently lives with our favorite rescue group, Paws4Ever, where we adopted Arlo. I went back to Paws4Ever last week with some friends (who adopted a dog!) and fell totally in love with her. Oh, she was so sweet, and climbed right up on my lap and purred and purred. Since we don’t go out or buy each other things for Valentine’s Day (it is both a tradition and a quiet protest of the commercialization of love), I have to get creative with how to do something special for Josh. I think it makes sense to honor him – and the pets we love- by spending the money we would have spent at a restaurant or on gifts in order to do a little bit of good in the world. It’s in support of an organization that does a LOT of good – Paws4Ever saves pets from high kill shelters, loves them and spays and neuters them and vaccinates them and trains them…they’re an amazing organization, and they have the nicest pets in the whole world. So for those of you North Carolina natives, go meet Kit Kat and the other amazing and adorable pets at Paws4Ever in Mebane!
Happy Valentine’s Day, folks. In spite of its commercialism, I do appreciate a day that reminds me to be grateful for love – not just for Josh, but for all of the people I love. This week even more than most weeks, I am so thankful for the life that I’ve got, and for all of the people in it.
